The Heart Never Gets a Day Off. One in Ten Dogs Has a Heart That Is Not Getting What It Needs.
Eleven ingredients spanning amino acids, antioxidants, cardioprotective botanicals, and bioavailable minerals. Working across every dimension of what healthy cardiac function requires, every single day.
The organ working hardest every single day
The heart beats over 100,000 times a day. It never rests, never gets a recovery period, never gets a break to rebuild. And heart disease in dogs develops the same way the heart works — quietly, without announcement.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, one in ten dogs has less than optimal cardiovascular health. That number climbs significantly in certain breeds, in senior dogs, and in dogs carrying extra weight or managing other chronic conditions. Like so many conditions that affect aging dogs, heart disease compensates. It works harder to do less. By the time a heart murmur is detected or symptoms appear, the heart has often been under significant strain for a long time.
Heart Health Formula was built to give the heart what it needs to keep working well. Whether the goal is supporting a dog already managing cardiovascular disease, protecting a breed with known cardiac predisposition, or investing in the long-term health of the organ that everything else depends on, this is the formula we trust.
Why cardiac muscle is different from every other muscle
The heart's constant activity creates two vulnerabilities that this formula addresses simultaneously.
Vulnerability 1 · Energy
Skeletal muscles rest between contractions. The heart does not. It has the highest concentration of energy-producing machinery of any tissue in the body. When that energy supply is insufficient, the heart cannot sustain its function. It becomes weaker. Contractions become less effective. The heart works harder to move the same volume of blood, and that compensatory effort accelerates the decline.
Vulnerability 2 · Electrical Balance
The electrical system that coordinates each heartbeat depends on specific minerals maintaining precise balance across cardiac cell membranes. When those minerals are insufficient, the electrical signals become erratic, rhythm problems develop, and the efficiency of the cardiac pump is further compromised.
What this formula addresses
Both vulnerabilities, alongside the antioxidant protection cardiac muscle requires, the botanical compounds studied specifically for their effects on cardiac muscle and coronary blood flow, and the oxygen transport support that every heartbeat depends on.
The full formula
Eleven ingredients across four dimensions of cardiac health. Each addressing something the others cannot.
Organized by what they do in the heart.
Dimension 1 · Cardiac Fuel and Energy
The heart runs primarily on fat, not carbohydrate. Getting fat into the energy-producing machinery, making the conversion process possible, and coordinating each contraction properly are three distinct jobs requiring three distinct ingredients.
Equal highest dose · the fuel transport molecule
Transports fat into the heart's energy-producing machinery
L-Carnitine is the molecule that carries fatty acids into the mitochondria where they can be converted into cellular energy. Without adequate L-Carnitine, the heart cannot efficiently access its primary fuel source, energy production falls, and cardiac muscle function suffers. L-Carnitine deficiency has been specifically identified as a contributing factor in dilated cardiomyopathy in certain dog breeds.
This is the ingredient responsible for the physical stamina dimension of cardiac health, the difference between a dog who manages a daily walk comfortably and one who tires after half a block. Research has shown that L-Carnitine supplementation improves both appetite and exercise tolerance in dogs with cardiac conditions.
Pumping strength + rhythm + antioxidant in cardiac tissue
Supports the heart's contractile strength, regulates the calcium flow that coordinates each contraction, and provides antioxidant protection within cardiac tissue.
Important if your dog eats grain-free or legume-heavy food: Research has specifically linked taurine deficiency in dogs to diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy. For dogs on these diets, taurine supplementation is not optional. It is essential.
CoQ10 · 20mg
Makes energy conversion possible · declines with age and medication
The molecule that makes energy production inside the mitochondria possible. Nowhere is it more critical than in the heart. CoQ10 levels decline with age and with certain pharmaceutical cardiac medications, making daily replenishment one of the most evidence-backed natural interventions for dogs managing heart disease.
Dimension 2 · Botanical Cardiac Support
Three botanicals with distinct and complementary mechanisms: improving how efficiently the heart pumps, protecting structural cardiac muscle integrity, and reducing the cardiovascular burden of stress.
Centuries of use · modern research validated
Helps the heart pump more effectively with less effort
One of the most extensively studied botanicals for cardiovascular health. Its active compounds work together to improve blood flow to the heart muscle itself, support healthy vascular tone, and enhance the efficiency of cardiac contractions. For a heart that is already working hard, improved contractile efficiency means it can sustain its function longer before compensatory mechanisms become necessary.
Also carries meaningful antioxidant activity specifically in cardiac tissue, protecting the heart muscle from the oxidative stress that constant metabolic activity generates. The most recognized and most studied cardiac botanical in this formula.
Arjuna Extract · 35mg
Structural cardiac muscle integrity
A botanical from Ayurvedic medicine with modern research confirming multiple mechanisms: supports healthy heart muscle function, helps maintain cardiac contractile strength, and carries cardioprotective antioxidant properties. Used in integrative veterinary cardiology protocols alongside conventional treatment for its role in supporting the structural integrity of cardiac muscle tissue.
Eleuthero Root Extract · 70mg
Reduces the cardiovascular burden of stress · supports stamina
The stress dimension most cardiac supplements never address. Chronic stress elevates cortisol and adrenaline, which increase heart rate, raise blood pressure, and place additional demand on an organ already working at capacity. Eleuthero helps the body manage that stress response more effectively, directly reducing the cardiovascular cost of chronic stress while supporting physical stamina and recovery.
Dimension 3 · Antioxidant Protection
The heart generates more oxidative stress through constant work than almost any other tissue. Two antioxidants protecting cardiac cell membranes and vascular tissue from the inside, through different and complementary mechanisms.
Protects cardiac cell membranes from within
The primary fat-soluble antioxidant in cell membranes. Cardiac muscle cells are particularly vulnerable to the oxidative damage that accumulates from decades of constant metabolic activity. Vitamin E protects those membranes from within, preventing the progressive damage that impairs cardiac function over time. The natural d-alpha tocopheryl form is significantly more bioavailable than the synthetic dl form found in most budget cardiac supplements.
Protects blood vessel lining and cardiovascular tissue
Supports healthy vascular function, helps regulate inflammatory pathways in cardiovascular tissue, and provides antioxidant protection specifically in the cells lining the blood vessels. Standard quercetin is very poorly absorbed and most passes through before reaching cardiovascular tissue. The phytosome form binds quercetin to phospholipids that the gut absorbs readily, dramatically improving how much active compound reaches the heart and vessels where it is needed.
Dimension 4 · Electrical Stability and Oxygen Transport
The minerals that keep every heartbeat coordinated and the oxygen carrier that makes every heartbeat meaningful.
Magnesium · Albion DiMagnesium Malate
Coordinates each heartbeat · prevents rhythm problems
Regulates the ion channels that allow the electrical signal to travel from cell to cell in the precise sequence that produces an effective, coordinated contraction. Magnesium deficiency is directly associated with irregular heartbeat and impaired cardiac function. The Albion DiMagnesium Malate form is among the most bioavailable available.
Potassium · Tripotassium Citrate
Electrical balance · normal heart rhythm
Works alongside magnesium in maintaining the electrical balance across cardiac cell membranes. Essential for normal heart rhythm and vascular tone. Potassium imbalances are a recognized contributor to cardiac arrhythmias. The citrate form is gentle on digestion, providing electrical stability without gastrointestinal irritation.
Iron · Ferrous Bisglycinate · 1.5mg
Oxygen transport to the heart and every organ
The mineral at the center of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to every tissue. The heart's ability to function depends entirely on adequate oxygen delivery. In dogs with cardiac conditions where circulation is already compromised, supporting optimal oxygen-carrying capacity is a meaningful contribution. The bisglycinate form is the most bioavailable and most gut-friendly available.
What this does in your dog's heart every day
Every dimension of cardiac function. A specific set of ingredients addressing it.
The heart's primary fuel pathway
L-Carnitine transports fatty acids into the energy-producing machinery. CoQ10 makes the energy conversion process possible. Taurine regulates the calcium flow that coordinates each contraction. Together they ensure the cardiac muscle has the fuel and mechanics it needs.
Antioxidant protection for cardiac tissue
Vitamin E protects cardiac cell membranes from oxidative damage. Quercetin Phytosome protects the cells lining the blood vessels. CoQ10 protects the energy-producing machinery where oxidative activity is most concentrated.
The heart's electrical system
Magnesium and Potassium maintain the precise mineral balance that allows each heartbeat to propagate normally, reducing the rhythm disruptions that arrhythmias produce.
Contractile strength and coronary blood flow
Hawthorn improves blood flow to the heart muscle and contractile efficiency. Arjuna supports structural cardiac muscle integrity. Eleuthero buffers the cardiovascular burden of chronic stress.
Oxygen delivery to the heart and every other organ
Iron maintains the hemoglobin that carries oxygen through the bloodstream to the cardiac muscle that needs it every second of every day. In dogs with cardiac conditions where circulation is already compromised, this oxygen transport support is particularly meaningful.
Is this right for your dog?
Worth starting if your dog meets any of these.
How to give it
One scoop per 25 lbs daily. Given as a treat or placed in food.
The unflavored powder mixes invisibly into wet or dry food. Also available in soft chew form with identical active ingredients.
| Dog's Weight | Daily Dose |

Questions and answers
Everything you want to know before you buy.
What does taurine do for a dog's heart?
Taurine supports three specific aspects of cardiac function. It supports cardiac muscle contractility, helping the heart pump with appropriate force and efficiency. It regulates the calcium flow inside cardiac cells essential for coordinating each contraction properly. And it provides antioxidant protection within cardiac tissue. Research has specifically linked taurine deficiency in dogs to diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy, making taurine supplementation particularly important for dogs eating grain-free or legume-heavy diets or for any dog with a history of cardiac challenges.
What does CoQ10 do for dogs with heart disease?
CoQ10 is the molecule that makes energy production inside the mitochondria possible. The heart has the highest concentration of mitochondria of any tissue in the body because it requires more cellular energy than any other organ. Research consistently shows that CoQ10 promotes oxygen utilization in cardiac tissue and supports the health of cardiac muscle. CoQ10 levels decline with age and with certain pharmaceutical medications used in cardiac protocols, making daily supplementation one of the most evidence-backed natural interventions for dogs managing heart disease.
Can natural supplements help dogs with heart murmurs?
Heart murmurs in dogs indicate some degree of cardiac structural or functional change. Natural cardiac support through L-Carnitine, Taurine, CoQ10, and the botanical and mineral ingredients in this formula addresses the nutritional dimensions of cardiac function that pharmaceutical treatment does not directly target. Always work with your veterinarian when managing any cardiac condition, and inform them of all supplements your dog is taking alongside any prescribed medications.
What dog breeds are most at risk for heart disease?
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have the highest genetic predisposition to mitral valve disease of any breed, with most developing a murmur by middle age. Dobermans have a high risk of dilated cardiomyopathy. Boxers are prone to a form of cardiac arrhythmia. Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds are prone to dilated cardiomyopathy. Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, and many hound breeds have elevated cardiac risk. For any of these breeds, starting cardiac nutritional support before clinical signs develop provides the most meaningful long-term protection.
Should I choose the soft chew or the powder version?
Both versions contain identical active ingredients. The soft chew is more convenient for dogs who accept treats willingly and for owners who find chews easier to administer consistently. The powder is preferable for dogs sensitive to soft chew inactive ingredients, very large dogs where chew count becomes cumbersome, or dogs who do better with supplements mixed invisibly into their food. Either format delivers the same cardiac support. The best one is the one your dog will accept consistently every single day.
Is this formula safe to use alongside conventional cardiac medication?
This formula is a natural nutritional supplement with a strong safety record in veterinary practice. However, if your dog is on prescription cardiac medications, discuss Heart Health Formula with your veterinarian before adding it. Some ingredients, particularly Hawthorn and Eleuthero, have cardiovascular activity worth factoring into any existing pharmaceutical protocol. Most integrative veterinarians are comfortable using this formula alongside conventional cardiac treatment, and many actively recommend it as part of a comprehensive cardiac management approach.
What do holistic vets recommend for dog heart disease?
Holistic and integrative veterinarians consistently recommend a multi-ingredient approach addressing cellular energy through L-Carnitine and CoQ10, muscle function through Taurine, antioxidant protection through Vitamin E and plant flavonoids, electrical stability through Magnesium and Potassium, and coronary blood flow through botanical cardiac herbs like Hawthorn. They also consistently emphasize reducing the cardiovascular burden of chronic stress through adaptogenic support, which is why Eleuthero is specifically included. This formula reflects exactly that comprehensive integrative approach in active clinical use.
The clean formula standard you expect

I was hopeful this would be great for my dog, but it ended up making him sick. I think I purchased it about 2-3 months ago and he immediately got diarrhea. It was the worst diarrhea I'd ever seen. Usually it resolves itself within a day or two. I waited longer than recommended to take him to the vet because he had no other issues and acted like his usual self. But when nausea started setting in I took him to the vet who put him on antibiotics and a probiotic to reset his stomach. After his vet treatment, I slowly added things back into his diet including his supplements and this is how I figured out for sure it was these chews.
Also, I suggest checking the expiration date on the bottom of the jar especially if your animal is small. My dog is only 6lbs so one jar would have lasted him almost a year! But the one I received expires June 2025, which is just about 3ish months from when I received it.
Bio-Cardio is an exceptional heart health supplemement, especially those with a heart murmur. Since starting my dog on Bio-Cardio, our vet has noted significant improvement in his heart condition. It's easy to administer and truly effective
One of my pups needed extra heart support. We started slowly and built up to first dose, as to not upset the stomach. After a couple months, our vet was super happy with the improvement it made on Oliver’s heart!!! It’s a must have!
We like Throne Vet products. So, we chose bio-cardio and took it, but unfortunately, my dog has a very sensitive stomach, so after taking it, she had a little diarrhea and a stomachache, so I can't take it anymore. It's too bad.
