The most abundant protein in your dog's body
Collagen accounts for roughly a third of all the protein in your dog's entire body. And it is the first one to decline. Most supplements address the symptoms of collagen loss. This one addresses the source.
Collagen is everywhere in your dog's body. It is in their joints, their cartilage, their tendons, their ligaments, their skin, their gut lining, their bones, and every connective tissue that holds all of those structures together. Without adequate collagen, nothing holds together the way it should.
Your dog's ability to produce collagen naturally declines with age, starting earlier than most people realize. By middle age, collagen production has already slowed enough to begin affecting joint comfort, skin quality, coat condition, and the strength of the gut wall. By the time visible signs appear, the depletion has been underway for years.
Joint supplements provide building blocks for cartilage repair. Skin supplements add fatty acids and vitamins. Gut supplements address the gut bacteria and the protective lining of the digestive tract. All of these are valuable. But none of them addresses the underlying structural protein that all of those tissues are primarily made of. CollagenVET addresses the source. Two grams of hydrolyzed bovine collagen peptides per scoop, providing the exact building blocks the body uses to produce and repair the collagen that joints, connective tissue, skin, gut, and bone all depend on.
Why collagen peptides work better than whole collagen
This is the detail that separates a collagen supplement that actually works from one that does not.
Whole collagen · the problem
Whole collagen protein molecules are too large to be absorbed through the gut wall intact. When your dog eats bone broth or any food rich in whole collagen, the digestive system breaks it down completely into its basic building blocks, called amino acids before absorption. Those amino acids then enter circulation and may or may not be directed toward building new collagen.
Hydrolyzed peptides · the solution
Hydrolysis breaks the collagen protein into short chains of amino acids that are small enough to cross the gut wall directly and enter the bloodstream intact. These short collagen peptides are then transported to the tissues that need them.
The remarkable part
When these collagen peptides reach the tissues, they do not just provide raw material. They send a biological signal to the body's own collagen-producing cells that collagen breakdown is occurring and production needs to increase. The body responds by ramping up its own collagen production. Peptides provide two things simultaneously: the building blocks and the signal to build more.
What collagen actually does in your dog's body
Five different tissues. Five different ways the same protein holds your dog together.
Understanding just how fundamental collagen is to the structural integrity of nearly every tissue in the body explains why collagen peptides produce benefits across areas that seem unrelated.
In the joints and cartilage
Cartilage, the smooth cushioning tissue that covers the ends of bones and allows them to glide without friction, is primarily composed of collagen. When collagen production slows, cartilage becomes thinner, less elastic, and less capable of absorbing the repetitive impact of daily movement. The result is the joint stiffness and reduced range of motion that many aging dogs live with. Collagen peptides provide the specific building blocks cartilage requires while signaling the cartilage-producing cells to increase their collagen output.
In tendons and ligaments
Tendons and ligaments are almost entirely collagen. Their ability to handle the physical demands of movement, absorb impact, and maintain their strength and flexibility under pressure depends entirely on the density and quality of their collagen framework. For active dogs, sporting breeds, dogs recovering from soft tissue injuries, and any dog at risk for ligament issues, maintaining collagen density reduces injury risk and supports recovery. This is the connective tissue dimension most pet parents do not think about until after an injury has already occurred.
In the skin and coat
The deep structural layer of the skin is primarily collagen. As dogs age and collagen production declines, the skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and less effective as a physical barrier against allergens, environmental irritants, and moisture loss. This is not just a cosmetic issue. When the skin barrier is compromised, allergens penetrate more easily, inflammatory responses are triggered more readily, and conditions like chronic itching and hot spots become more frequent. Coat quality improvement is often the most visible and most immediate result pet parents notice.
In the gut wall
The gut wall contains a significant collagen component that contributes directly to the structural integrity of the intestinal barrier. The tight connections between gut lining cells that prevent leaky gut are supported by the collagen framework in which they sit. When that matrix is adequate, the gut barrier holds together effectively. Collagen peptides, particularly an amino acid called glycine that they contain in high amounts, support the maintenance and repair of this intestinal collagen framework, reinforcing gut barrier function in a way that complements the probiotic and mucosal support that other gut supplements provide.
In bones and muscles
Bone is roughly a third collagen by weight. That collagen framework provides the flexible scaffolding within which calcium and other minerals are deposited. Without adequate collagen, bone becomes more brittle despite normal mineral content, because the flexible framework that gives bone its resilience is missing. For senior dogs and large breeds with elevated orthopedic demands, supporting the collagen framework in bone alongside mineral supplementation is a more complete approach to skeletal health.
Why one protein affects so many different areas
Collagen is not a specialized compound. It is the primary structural protein of connective tissue throughout the body. When collagen levels are adequate, the tissues that depend on it function well. When collagen declines, everything built from it declines with it, often in ways that seem unrelated until you understand the common thread.
This is why collagen peptide supplementation consistently produces benefits across joints, skin, gut, and coat simultaneously. The protein being replenished is the same one that all of those tissues need.

Questions and answers
Everything you want to know before you buy.
What is the difference between whole collagen and collagen peptides?
Whole collagen protein molecules are too large to be absorbed through the gut wall intact. When your dog consumes whole collagen from food or supplements, the digestive system breaks it down completely into its basic building blocks, called amino acids before absorption can occur, and those amino acids may or may not be directed toward building new collagen. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are pre-broken into short amino acid chains that cross the gut wall directly and enter the bloodstream intact. Once there, they provide the specific building blocks collagen-producing cells use, and they send a biological signal to those cells to increase collagen production. This is why collagen peptides consistently outperform whole collagen sources in research.
How does collagen support dog joint health?
Cartilage is composed primarily of collagen. When the body's collagen production slows with age, cartilage becomes thinner and less resilient, leading to joint stiffness and discomfort. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides provide the specific building-block proteins (glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) that the cartilage-producing cells use to build and repair cartilage, and they signal those cells to increase their activity. This addresses the structural dimension of joint health that glucosamine and chondroitin also support in complementary ways, which is why CollagenVET and Joint Support Formula work particularly well together.
Can collagen help my dog's skin and coat?
Yes, and for a specific structural reason. The deep layer of the skin is primarily collagen. When skin collagen declines, the skin becomes thinner, drier, less elastic, and less effective as a physical barrier. This compromised skin barrier means allergens penetrate more easily, moisture is lost more readily, and inflammatory reactions are triggered more frequently. Collagen peptides support the rebuilding of skin collagen, improving skin barrier function at the structural level rather than just addressing surface symptoms. Coat quality improvement is typically one of the earliest and most visible changes pet parents notice, often within four to six weeks of consistent daily supplementation.
How long does it take for collagen supplementation to show results?
Most pet parents begin to notice meaningful changes in four to eight weeks of consistent daily use, with the most commonly reported early improvements being coat quality and ease of movement. The structural collagen rebuilding in joints, tendons, and ligaments develops over a longer period of sustained supplementation, typically three to six months of daily use. Collagen production is a slow process that builds on itself over time. Consistency is the most important factor.
Is CollagenVET enough on its own, or does it need to be combined with other supplements?
CollagenVET is a powerful standalone supplement for dogs at any life stage, and for many dogs it is exactly what is missing from their current protocol. For dogs with active joint disease, adding Joint Support Formula provides the glucosamine, chondroitin, and anti-inflammatory support that works alongside collagen's structural contribution. For dogs with ligament or tendon injuries, adding Connective Tissue Formula provides the herbal healing support specific to those tissues. For dogs whose collagen supplementation is primarily motivated by gut health, adding Gut Health Formula covers the mucosal and microbial dimensions alongside. CollagenVET is the structural foundation. Other formulas add targeted depth in specific areas.
What do holistic vets recommend for collagen supplementation in dogs?
Holistic and integrative veterinarians consistently recommend hydrolyzed collagen peptides over whole collagen sources for the absorption reasons described above. They recommend bovine source for dogs because its building block protein profile is a close match to what a dog's body uses to make collagen. They consistently note that collagen supplementation works best when started before significant structural decline has occurred and continued daily over the long term rather than used as a short-term intervention. They also consistently recommend pairing collagen with adequate Vitamin C, either through diet or a multivitamin, since Vitamin C is an essential helper ingredient the body needs to effectively use collagen peptides.
The clean formula standard you expect
The protein that holds your dog together deserves to be replenished every single day.
Collagen is one of those supplements that sounds almost too simple to be meaningful. One ingredient. One protein. Nothing exotic. And yet when you understand what collagen actually does in the body and how profoundly its decline affects joint function, skin integrity, gut health, and physical resilience, the simplicity becomes exactly the point.

I’ve been using the ThorneVet CollagenVET/ grass fed collagen for about 2 months now on my 5 year old German Shepherd who has allergies. Though it’s not completely allowed us to get off his Apoquel, it has resolved many other issues like, the stinky frito feet, his coat is softer and healthier and doesn’t get that grimy grease feel to it and it has eliminated the “yeasty/dirty” dog smell. Will definitely continue to use for him and more than likely my other shepherd in the near future.
One of the best products. I love thornevets quality and efficay. A must have to help protect your dogs joints
Ive noticed firmer stools, improved digestion, and better energy since starting this probiotic. I love that it’s soil based and free from fillers-just clean, effective ingredients. Its a great addition to any dogs wellness routine.
This collagen has quickly become a staple in our home. Joint support is one of my top priorities, especially owning a dog breed that is prone to hip dysplasia and bad joints. I am a huge fan of collagen and this one from Thornevet is hands down my favorite. Made from bovine Collagen peptides, it supports healthy joints, skin/coat, and gut health by providing essential amino acids that promote strength, elasticity, and overall well being. The benefits are never ending! I like to rotate all my supplements, but I always tend to come back to this collagen regularly. It's a great way to keep dogs of all ages joints, muscles, and tendons healthy and strong. This is especially great for dogs recovering from an injury or very active sport dogs.
I love this tasty collagen added to my breakfast to help my joints and skin/coat do well, and also keep my itchiness in check. the taste is great for me and the powder really dissolves well. maybe this is why I am a furry monster and my fur keeps growing so quick! haha
